Opening a second, fifth or twentieth branch is where water quality starts to cost you. Each new site has its own supply, its own plumbing and its own installer. In Saudi Arabia the supply itself differs by city. That is why many café and hotel groups standardise on a modular filter head. Everpure QL Systems separate a fixed head from a twist-in cartridge, so every branch can follow the same method while the cartridge and any pre-treatment are matched to the local water.
This guide covers where QL fits in Saudi foodservice, how to choose the cartridge, and how to run it across several sites. To discuss your group, request a quote.
TL;DR
- QL is a modular filter-head platform from Pentair Everpure for low-flow beverage equipment such as espresso machines, brewers and tea equipment.
- The head stays plumbed in. The cartridge twists out and a new one twists in, so changes are quick and repeatable across branches.
- Pentair lists a service flow of 0.5 gpm (1.0 L/min), a rated capacity of 1,500 to 3,000 gallons (5,678 to 11,355 litres), 0.5 micron filtration and NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 certification.
- Saudi mains water is a blend of desalinated seawater and groundwater, so the right cartridge, and whether you need pre-treatment, depends on the site.
- Sovereign Water supplies, installs and maintains QL across Saudi Arabia.
A growing market makes consistency valuable
Market reports put the number of cafés in Saudi Arabia above 3,500 and expect branded coffee outlets to reach about 5,350 by 2027 (see Business Wire and World Coffee Portal). Chains compete on a consistent cup. If one branch has a harder supply or a worn filter, customers taste the difference before anyone sees a fault.
Why the supply changes by city
About half of Saudi drinking water is desalinated and about 40% comes from groundwater, according to the national overview. Riyadh is fed mostly by desalinated water pumped around 467 km from the Gulf, blended with groundwater. Published studies of groundwater in regions such as Hail show hardness from about 72 to 310 ppm and TDS from about 258 to 775 ppm. See the KAUST overview for the regional detail.
The result is that the same machine can need different protection in two cities. A QL head is the constant. The cartridge is the variable.
How the QL head works
The head is a fixed mounting block connected to the cold water supply and the appliance. The cartridge twists on as a quick-change part, so a routine change does not need a long shutdown or any work on the plumbing. That matters for a barista or a hotel engineer who has minutes, not hours.
Smaller sites run one head for one machine. Larger sites can manifold several heads for a multi-group bar or a combined coffee and ice setup. Pentair's 2024 Foodservice Catalog shows how QL sits alongside the Coldrink, Insurice and SC platforms, so one supplier can specify a whole kitchen.
According to Pentair's QL page, the range is suited to low-flow coffee brewing, with prefiltration media that reduces chlorine taste and odour and filters particles down to 0.5 microns.
Picking the cartridge for each branch
Use the same four questions at every site:
- What does it feed? Espresso machine, batch brewer, tea unit or cold drink dispenser.
- What is the flow? Stay within the rated service flow of the head.
- What does the water need? Chlorine taste and sediment are the common complaints. Scale needs a cartridge or stage designed to control it.
- How hard is the supply? If hardness is high, a cartridge alone may be used up quickly. Add a softener, antiscalant dosing or a small reverse osmosis unit ahead of it.
We answer question four from the site's real water, not from the city name, because two addresses in one city can differ.
Running QL across several sites
- One standard. Same head, same method, same change routine for every branch.
- A schedule set from data. Cartridge life depends on the model, the volume filtered and the hardness. We set changeout dates from real site use, not a blanket figure.
- Records. Each change is logged, so you can show a branch was serviced on time.
- One contact. Our Comprehensive Maintenance programme handles scheduled changes and checks, so branches are not left waiting for a reactive call-out.
Protecting the machine and the cup
Scale and sediment shorten the life of espresso machines and brewers, and they dull cup quality long before anything visibly fails. A cartridge keeps particles out of solenoids and brew groups, reduces chlorine taste, and helps protect boilers, pumps and heat exchangers. The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) publishes recommended ranges for TDS, hardness and alkalinity in brewing water, and a correctly specified cartridge helps a site land inside them. Where a site needs controlled mineral content, not just filtration, the Everpure EZ-RO is the next step up.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is QL used for?
Low-flow beverage equipment: espresso machines, brewers, tea machines and some cold drink dispensers.
Does QL remove limescale?
Some cartridges include scale control, but in hard-water areas a cartridge alone is often not enough. We may add a softener or RO unit upstream.
How often should cartridges be changed?
It depends on the cartridge, the volume and the hardness. Pentair lists a rated capacity of 1,500 to 3,000 gallons. We set the schedule from your actual use.
Can QL be added to existing coffee equipment?
Yes. The head retrofits into most existing installations. We check pressure, flow and plumbing first.
Is Sovereign Water an authorised Everpure supplier in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. We supply, install and maintain the full Everpure range.
