Regal · Sovereign range

Softeners for Saudi groundwater blends.

Part of Saudi Arabia's supply is groundwater, and that is where the scale comes from. Regal softeners take out the calcium and magnesium before they coat heaters, kettles and pipes, from an under-sink unit for a flat to twin vessels for a hotel. Our team in Saudi Arabia sizes, installs and services each one in Riyadh, Jeddah and other cities.

How softening works

Inside the softener, step by step.

Hard water passes through beads of ion-exchange resin, which hold on to calcium and magnesium and release sodium. The diagram shows a metered softener in service, part by part.

Water softener schematic, in serviceHard water enters the control valve, flows down through the resin bed, up the riser tube and out through the water meter as soft water. A bypass joins the inlet and outlet. A brine line links the valve to the salt tank, and a drain line with an air gap carries rinse water away during regeneration. A drinking tap is fed with unsoftened water before the softener.CONTROL VALVEHard water inSoft water outBypass (closed in service)To drainMineral tankBrine tankDrinking tap(unsoftened)12345678910
Hard water Soft water Brine To drain
  1. 1
    Bypass valve

Isolates the softener for servicing while keeping water flowing to the building.

  2. 2
    Control valve

Routes water through each stage and runs regeneration automatically.

  3. 3
    Water meter

Counts every litre of soft water, so regeneration happens only when the resin is nearly spent.

  4. 4
    Mineral tank

The pressure vessel. Headroom above the resin lets the bed lift and clean itself on backwash.

  5. 5
    Ion-exchange resin

Beads charged with sodium. Calcium and magnesium stick to them and sodium is released.

  6. 6
    Riser tube & distributor

Soft water is collected at the base of the tank and rises up the centre tube to the outlet.

  7. 7
    Salt & brine

Salt dissolves in the water at the base of the tank to make the brine used to recharge the resin.

  8. 8
    Brine well & safety float

Draws brine out and meters the refill. The float stops the tank from overfilling.

  9. 9
    Drain with air gap

Carries rinse water away. The air gap stops drain water from ever siphoning back.

  10. 10
    Drinking tap

Teed off before the softener, so one kitchen tap stays on unsoftened water.

The regeneration cycle

When the resin needs a recharge.

The meter tracks how much water has passed. When the resin is almost used up, the valve regenerates it, either straight away or at a quiet time such as late at night. A twin system hands over to its second tank, so the supply carries on.

  1. In service

    Service

Hard water flows down through the resin and leaves as soft water. The meter counts each litre used.

  2. Stage 1

    Backwash

Water runs up through the tank, lifting and loosening the bed and flushing trapped sediment to drain.

  3. Stage 2

    Brine draw & slow rinse

Brine is drawn from the salt tank through the resin. It strips off the calcium and magnesium and recharges the beads with sodium.

  4. Stage 3

    Fast rinse

A fast flow of water resettles the bed and rinses the last of the brine and hardness to drain.

  5. Stage 4

    Brine refill

A measured volume of water refills the salt tank, making fresh brine for the next regeneration.

Stages vary from valve to valve. Some include a second backwash, and the up-flow Regal 100 and 200 push brine upward through the resin, which uses less salt.

Why soften

What hard groundwater stops doing.

Heaters stay clear

No scale build-up
  • Water heaters and boilers stay free of scale
  • Dishwashers and coffee machines are protected
  • Taps, valves and pipes stay clear
  • Kettle elements stay clean

Better every day

You see it at the sink
  • Soap lathers with less
  • Fewer marks on glasses and dishes
  • No white crust on taps or shower glass
  • Less time spent descaling

Economical to run

Uses only what it needs
  • Salt and water used by meter, not by clock
  • Clack and CE control valves
  • Low-power electronics
  • Serviced by our team in Saudi Arabia

Why Regal

Same engineering, any size of building.

Every Regal shares metered regeneration and proven control valves. A villa in Riyadh and a hotel in Jeddah get the same design, only larger or smaller.

  • Sized to your supply's hardness and flow
  • Pairs with CrownGuard filtration for roof-tank water
  • An unsoftened drinking tap fitted as standard practice
  • Maintenance plans from a fixed annual fee
Your questions answered

Softening in Saudi Arabia, answered.

Q1What is a water softener?
A tank of ion-exchange resin that removes calcium and magnesium, the minerals that form scale. It gives sodium back in their place, so the water stops leaving deposits in heaters, pipes and machines.
Q2Which Regal is right for us?
It depends on the hardness and how much water you use at peak. Flats and smaller villas suit a Regal 100 or 150, and large villas a Regal 200. Restaurants and laundries suit a Regal 500, and factories a Regal 750 or the Twin 3672. Share your site details and we recommend one.
Q3Can the family drink softened water?
Standard practice is to keep one kitchen tap unsoftened for drinking and cooking, and for baby formula. We fit that tap during installation.
Q4How often does it need salt?
That depends on the hardness and your water use. The meter only regenerates when the resin needs it, and the larger systems carry separate brine tanks sized to the site. We give you a guide when we size it.
Q5Softener or filter: which do I need?
A softener deals with hardness. A filter deals with sediment, taste and odour, such as water that has sat in a roof tank. Many Saudi homes use both, like a Regal softener with a CrownGuard system.
Q6Who installs and looks after it?
Our team in Saudi Arabia installs every Regal softener and can look after it on a maintenance plan, in Riyadh, Jeddah and other cities.
Local notes

Regal in Saudi Arabia

About half of Saudi Arabia's drinking water is desalinated. The rest comes from groundwater, and that is where the hardness lives: groundwater feeding Riyadh's blend measured 197 to 281 mg/l, close to the ministry's 300 mg/l limit.

Hard water leaves scale in kettles, water heaters, dishwashers and roof-tank fittings. Regal softeners remove the calcium and magnesium behind it, from a 10-litre under-sink unit to twin vessels for hotels, priced in riyals.

Common questions

Is Riyadh water hard enough to need a softener?

It can be. The groundwater in Riyadh's blend measured 197 to 281 mg/l hardness, and the mix changes with the source. Where scale shows on taps and machines, a softener is worth fitting.

Does the summer heat make scale worse?

Yes. Hardness drops out as scale faster in hot water, so roof tanks and water heaters in summer see the most of it. Softening protects heaters and kettles most.

Can a softener go before a reverse osmosis unit?

Yes. On hard groundwater supplies, softening first helps keep scale off the RO membranes. Regal is often paired with our RO range.

In Saudi Arabia

Supplied, installed and serviced in Saudi Arabia

Saudi supply is a mix of desalinated water and groundwater. Where groundwater is blended in, as in Riyadh, the water can be hard enough to scale heaters and machines, so we check your supply before choosing a system.

Tell us your city, whether the site is on mains or tanker water, and what the system is for. We specify it, quote in riyals and install it.
