Can You Drink Tap Water in Saudi Arabia? A Guide for Offices, Venues and Homes

Saudi network water meets national standards, yet most households don't drink it from the tap. Here is why, and what to drink from instead.

Can you drink tap water in Saudi Arabia? The water the Saudi Water Authority delivers meets national drinking standards. Most people still don't drink it straight from the tap. In 2024, bottled water was the main drinking source for 47.3% of households, according to the General Authority for Statistics. The reason is usually the building, not the network: rooftop tanks, old pipes and tanker top-ups. The safe answer is to drink from a filtered, maintained outlet, not an unchecked tap.

Last updated: October 2026. This guide is for office managers, facilities teams, hotel and restaurant operators, and homeowners in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and across the Kingdom who want a straight answer about tap water, and a practical plan for drinking water they can trust.

TL;DR

  • Most of the Kingdom's drinking water is desalinated seawater. In parts of the country, including Riyadh province, groundwater or dam water is blended in.
  • The water SWA delivers meets national specifications, but most households don't drink it straight from the tap. Bottled water was the main drinking source for 47.3% of households in 2024.
  • What reaches your glass also depends on building tanks, pipework and how drinking equipment is maintained.
  • For workplaces, a mains-fed BRITA dispenser is a strong final step. For homes, a RoyalFlow tap gives filtered, chilled and boiling water from one outlet.

Where Saudi tap water comes from

Saudi Arabia is the most populous country that relies mainly on desalinated seawater for drinking. The Saudi Water Authority (SWA), known until 2024 as the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), is the largest producer. It produces around 6 million cubic metres of desalinated water a day and is responsible for delivering around 11 million cubic metres a day to homes and industry.

Two things make the Saudi system unusual. First, much of the water travels long distances by pipeline before anyone drinks it, for example from the Gulf coast to Riyadh. Second, desalinated water is blended with groundwater in places such as Riyadh province, and with dam water in Makkah, Asir and Jazan. So the water in one city can have a different character from the water in another, even when both are safe.

The production side is also changing. About 35% of SWA's desalinated water comes from reverse osmosis plants, with most of the rest from older thermal plants. That share is expected to reverse by 2030.

Who is responsible for what

Several bodies share the job of getting water to your tap:

StageWhoRole
StandardsMinistry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) and SASOSet the national drinking water specifications, based on World Health Organization guidelines
Production and transmissionSaudi Water Authority and private plant operatorsDesalinate, treat and pump water across the Kingdom
City distributionNational Water Company (NWC)Runs water and sanitation networks and connects customers
Inside the buildingThe owner or operatorTanks, pumps, pipework, filters, coolers and taps

The Gulf standard for unbottled drinking water, GSO 149, also applies across the GCC. The important point for any building is the last row. Once water passes your meter, its quality is in your hands.

Is tap water in Saudi Arabia safe? What the monitoring shows

The best public evidence is the SWA study published in the journal Water in June 2024. It reports monitoring across SWA's desalination plants and transmission system from 2020 to 2022. The authors found that water delivered to consumers meets MEWA specifications, with a few minor exceptions:

  • TDS (total dissolved solids) below the specification on some long pipelines that carry only desalinated water.
  • pH slightly outside the range, mostly on longer pipelines.
  • Occasional bromate readings above the 10 ppb limit, which improved significantly over the study.
  • Occasional boron readings above 2.4 ppm at some sites fed mainly by reverse osmosis water.

The study describes the water as "of high and consistent quality" and, at the point of delivery, "as safe to drink as the water provided by municipal water systems in Europe or North America". Disinfection by-products and heavy metals were low compared with public supplies in high-income countries that rely on rivers and groundwater.

For TDS and what those numbers mean in practice, see our guide to TDS and ppm in Saudi Arabia.

Why the tap in your building may taste different

National monitoring stops at the network. Between the network and your glass, a typical Saudi building adds an underground tank, a pump, a rooftop tank and a run of pipes. Each one can change the water.

Tanks in the heat. Rooftop tanks sit in intense summer sun. Warm, still water loses its chlorine and gives bacteria a chance to grow. Cracked or uncovered tanks can let in dust and insects. The World Health Organization's guidance on water safety in buildings treats storage tanks as one of the main places where quality is lost.

Old pipework. The SWA study notes that earlier Riyadh studies found higher heavy metal levels in household water than in its own network samples, which may point partly to corrosion inside the delivery system. Older galvanised or copper pipes can add metals and an off taste.

Tanker top-ups. Some buildings top up their tanks from water tankers, which adds another link in the chain and another chance for contamination.

Coolers and filters. A dispenser is only as good as its upkeep. A 2019 study of 63 water coolers in Makkah hotels and pilgrim buildings found good results overall, with total coliform in 3.2% of samples, and still recommended regular inspection and maintenance. Old filters and dirty drip trays are where problems start.

Riyadh, Jeddah and the Eastern Province

Riyadh. Water reaches the capital by long pipelines from the Gulf coast and is blended with local groundwater. That blend affects mineral content and taste. Can you drink tap water in Riyadh? The supply is treated to national standards, and the same building checks below decide what comes out of your tap.

Jeddah and Makkah. Supply comes from Red Sea desalination plants, with dam water added in some areas. NWC opened a regional water testing laboratory in Jeddah. For more on the west coast, read our Jeddah water quality guide.

Dammam, Khobar and Jubail. These cities sit close to the large Gulf coast plants, so water travels a shorter distance before use.

Drinking water for workplaces and homes

Most of the risk at the tap sits inside the building, so the most useful step is a controlled, maintained drinking point. Sovereign Water supplies, installs and maintains drinking water systems across the Kingdom. For workplaces we fit BRITA. For homes we fit our own RoyalFlow taps.

Offices, hotels and restaurants: BRITA

A mains-fed BRITA dispenser replaces bottle deliveries with filtered water on tap. The BRITA Top Pro serves chilled still, sparkling, semi-sparkling and ambient water, in versions for roughly 10 to 60 or 20 to 100 users. Its ThermalGate feature heat-disinfects the outlet on a programmed cycle, which helps with the hygiene points above. For hotels and large venues, the BRITA Fill Pro serves 50 to 250 people and can fill two bottles at once, and we add commercial water filtration on the incoming supply where the building needs it.

Villas and apartments: RoyalFlow

At home, one tap does the job of the kettle, the filter jug and the water bottles. RoyalFlow for the home pours boiling, chilled, sparkling and ambient filtered water from a single kitchen tap. A compact unit under the sink has carbon filtration and UV built in, it serves households of up to eight people, and the boiling water has a child safety lock. Our engineers install it and keep it serviced.

A simple plan before you drink from the tap

Whether you manage an office tower or your own villa, these steps decide what you are drinking:

  • Know your tanks. Find out when the underground and rooftop tanks were last cleaned and disinfected, and by whom. Check the lids close and seal.
  • Use a qualified contractor. Ask for a cleaning and disinfection report after every visit, and keep it on file.
  • Look at the pipework. In older buildings, ask whether any galvanised or copper pipes remain on the drinking water lines.
  • Run quiet taps. After a holiday, Ramadan hours or a vacant period, run outlets before drinking from them.
  • Choose your drinking points. Pick a small number of maintained outlets for drinking, rather than every tap in the building.
  • Plan the upkeep. Any dispenser or filter needs scheduled filter changes and cleaning. A maintenance contract keeps it on time and on record.

Food outlets have extra duties around water hygiene. Our Legionella guide for Saudi food outlets covers them.

Frequently asked questions

Is tap water in Saudi Arabia safe to drink?

The water SWA delivers meets national specifications. Most people still don't drink it straight from the tap, because building tanks, old pipes and tanker top-ups can change it before it reaches the glass. Drink from a filtered, maintained outlet rather than an unchecked tap.

Can you drink tap water in Riyadh?

Riyadh's water is desalinated seawater blended with local groundwater and treated to national standards. Taste and minerals can differ from coastal cities. The condition of your building's tanks and pipework matters most.

Why do people in Saudi Arabia drink bottled water?

Bottled water was the main drinking source for 47.3% of Saudi households in 2024, down from 57.2% in 2023. Taste and doubts about building tanks are common reasons. A filtered, mains-fed dispenser or tap addresses taste and gives you one maintained outlet, without bottle deliveries.

How often should a water tank be cleaned in Saudi Arabia?

Check with your municipality and your tank cleaning contractor for the schedule that applies to your building. Clean sooner if you see sediment, smell anything unusual or find a damaged lid.
